How to Crochet the Star Stitch

Once you’ve mastered the basic crochet stitches, you can easily move forward with textured and complex stitches. All crochet stitch patterns are based on the combination of the seven stitches of crochet. The star stitch is a beginner-friendly stitch that works in a two-row pattern with any crochet hook. The beautiful star stitch in crochet looks great for dense patterns. From washcloths, winter blankets, hats or even a scarf, any project becomes all the more impressive with this simple stitch!

In this blog let’s take you through the steps of how to crochet the star stitch. Just get your favorite crochet hook and yarn. You can use any yarn in your stash for practice. Just keep in mind that it matches the crochet hook size. Every pattern can have different instructions on the crochet star stitch as the spikes of the star can be more or less.

So, let’s get started.

Step 1: Make a slip knot on your crochet hook

The slip knot anchors the yarn to the hook. Every maker has their own style to make the knot, just make sure to leave a 6-inch yarn tail hanging for weaving in the ends.

Step 2: Make the Foundation Chain

Start with any odd number of chain stitches or the number a pattern instructs to. If you are planning your own design remember the chains will act as the spikes of your stars so make them accordingly. To practice your crochet star it is recommended to work with an odd number of chain stitches.

To make a chain, yarn over and pull yarn through the stitch on the hook. Make sure to turn the crochet hook towards yourself and make neat loops.

Step 3: Draw up Loops on the Hook

Now, insert your crochet hook into the 2nd chain. Yarn over the hook and pull up a loop (You’ll have 2 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull yarn through loops on the hook. Start with single crochet (SC) stitch (in US terms but known as double crochet stitch in UK terms). But, instead of completing the stitch, leave the loop on the hook.

Insert your hook into each foundation chain stitch, yarn over and pull through until there are 6 loops on your hook.

Work with even tension so all the loops on the hook are the same size.

Step 4: Yarn Over and Pull Through the Loops

Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. You have made a star but it is not completed yet.

Step 5: Finish the First Star

Chain one and finish the star.

The center of the star stitch will have an ‘eye’ or a hole that is very important for the stitch pattern’s look.

Step 6: Start with the second Crochet Star Stitch

To start with another start stitch, insert your crochet hook into the center of the previous star, yarn over and pull through. You’ll have 2 loops on your hook.

Now insert your hook into the space between the 2 last spikes (chains) from the first "star." Yarn over and pull through. You’ll have 3 loops on your hook.

Insert your hook into the same chain where you worked the last stitch of the previous star. Yarn over and pull through. There will be 4 loops on the crochet hook.

Insert your crochet hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull through. Repeat in the next chain.

Now you will have 6 loops on your hook.

Finish this second star as you did the first one. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Chain 1 and close the star.

Continue these steps to make stars all the way across the row. Even when you work with crochet stitches in the round, the steps are the same.

When you get to the end, make 1 half double crochet stitch (HDC) in the last stitch or a single crochet stitch (SC) whichever seems comfortable to you. You can continue with rows of star stitches or crochet a row of HDC or SC between each row of star stitches. This will balance the textured stitch pattern allowing the stitches to bloom beautifully. Just make sure to not miss the turning chains. For SC, you need 1 chain while for HDC you need to make 2 chains.

For the crochet start stitch, you can easily replace the single crochet stitch with half double crochet stitches. With half-double crochet (HDC)  stitches, you can also make this textured stitch on even-numbered rows. The effect will be the same. You can also try to change colors while crocheting, just make sure to add them at the end of the row or round. Just make sure to have your finishing needle to neatly weave in the yarn ends or crochet the ends while working on the pattern.

Crochet is all about having fun and being creative. With these steps go on and make a swatch. You can easily add textured patterns to any project and make them truly breathtaking!
